Legendary actress Naseem Banu, often hailed as the ‘Beauty Queen’ of her era, was celebrated not only for her stunning looks and remarkable acting but also for the important role she played in shaping her family’s life. She is widely believed to have played a key part in bringing together her daughter, Saira Banu, and legendary actor Dilip Kumar, whose marriage became one of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories.
Born as Roshan Ara Begum on July 4, 1916, in Delhi, Naseem Banu’s mother wanted her to become a doctor. However, Naseem was fascinated by the world of cinema from a young age. According to popular accounts, she was deeply inspired by films and actors and developed an early passion for acting.
During a film shoot, she met renowned filmmaker Sohrab Modi, who offered her a role in one of his films. Although her mother initially rejected the offer, Naseem’s determination eventually changed her mind.
Naseem Banu made her acting debut in 1935 with the film Khoon Ka Khoon. However, she gained widespread recognition with Pukar in 1939, in which she portrayed the character of Noor Jahan. Her beauty and acting skills won immense appreciation, earning her the title of the ‘Beauty Queen’ of Hindi cinema.
Over the years, she starred in several memorable films, including Talaq, Vasanti, Chal Chal Re Naujawan, Anokhi Ada, Sheesh Mahal and Shabistan. She was among the highest-paid actresses of her time and enjoyed popularity both in India and abroad. Apart from acting, she also explored film production and costume designing.
Naseem Banu married Mian Ehsan-ul-Haq and had two children, including daughter Saira Banu, who later became one of Hindi cinema’s leading actresses. Reports suggest that Saira had been a huge admirer of Dilip Kumar since childhood.
When Saira’s name began to be linked with actor Rajendra Kumar, Naseem reportedly became concerned and sought Dilip Kumar’s help in advising her daughter. During this period, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu grew closer, and their friendship eventually blossomed into love.
In 1966, Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu got married, and many believe that Naseem Banu played a crucial role in guiding their relationship in the right direction.
After a long and successful career, Naseem Banu gradually stepped away from acting. She passed away in Mumbai on June 18, 2002, at the age of 85, leaving behind a rich cinematic legacy and an enduring place in the history of Indian cinema.
