Lionel Messi reached another historic milestone in professional football by scoring his 900th career goal, becoming only the second player in history to achieve the feat. However, despite the landmark goal, Inter Miami CF were eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Messi scored the milestone goal against Nashville SC during the second leg of the Round of 16 match at Geodis Park. The Argentine superstar found the net in the 7th minute, marking his eighth goal in the tournament. He has also provided two assists for Inter Miami in the competition.
With this achievement, Messi joins Cristiano Ronaldo as the only footballers in history to score 900 or more professional goals. Ronaldo had previously reached the milestone in September 2024 while playing for Portugal national football team against Croatia national football team.
The 38-year-old Argentine striker has scored goals for several teams during his illustrious career, including Argentina national football team, FC Barcelona, Paris Saint‑Germain F.C., and Inter Miami. Messi has also won the prestigious Ballon d’Or eight times.
In 2012, Messi set a historic record by scoring 91 goals in a single calendar year, including 79 for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina. He is also the fastest player to score 100 goals in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the mark in just 123 matches.
Despite Messi’s historic strike, Inter Miami’s journey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup ended after the aggregate score finished 1-1. Nashville advanced to the next round on the away goals rule after the first leg ended in a goalless draw.
Messi had given Inter Miami an early lead in the second leg with a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Bryan Schwake. However, Nashville equalized in the 74th minute through a goal from Cristian Espinoza.
With this result, Nashville SC advanced to the quarterfinals, achieving the club’s best-ever performance in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
