The item song “Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke” from the upcoming film KD: The Devil has sparked a major controversy, reaching from social media debates to discussions in Parliament. The Hindi version of the song has already been removed from several social media platforms.
Taking suo motu cognizance, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated action under the National Women and Child Welfare Act, 1990, alleging obscenity and indecency in the song’s content.
In a statement posted on X (Twitter), the Commission said that the song appears to contain sexually provocative and objectionable material, potentially violating provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
The Commission has issued summons to actress Nora Fatehi, lyricist Rakeeb Alam, actor Sanjay Dutt, producer Venkat K. Narayana of KVN Group, and the film’s director. All concerned individuals have been asked to appear before the Commission on March 24 at 12:30 PM, along with relevant documents. The NCW warned that legal action may follow if they fail to appear.
The song has faced strong criticism for its allegedly explicit lyrics. Addressing the controversy, Nora Fatehi said she was unaware of the nature of the Hindi version, explaining that the song was originally shot in Kannada and that she had no knowledge of the controversial Hindi lyrics.
The actress also clarified that she will not promote the song following the backlash.
Earlier, in Parliament, Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, stated that such songs cannot be justified in the name of artistic freedom or freedom of expression. He confirmed that the controversial track had already been banned.
