Seasonal transitions bring not only changes in the weather but also require adjustments in our diet. The month of Phalguna began on February 2 and will continue through March. During this period, cold winds descending from the mountains can affect immunity, leading to a higher incidence of colds, coughs, and viral infections. Therefore, modifying dietary habits becomes essential to prevent illness.

Phalguna is often described as a month of joy and celebration, when yellow mustard fields bloom and the environment feels vibrant. However, according to Ayurveda, pleasant weather can also make the body more vulnerable. Warm days and cool nights create fluctuations that may disturb bodily balance. With the onset of Phalguna, Pitta is believed to increase in the body while Kapha gradually subsides. Proper dietary choices can help strengthen the body from within.


What to Avoid During Phalguna

Ayurveda advises avoiding chickpeas during this month. Traditionally, at the beginning of Holi celebrations, roasted chickpeas and wheat grains are consumed. However, chickpeas are considered heavy to digest, and digestive fire (Agni) is believed to be weaker during this season. As a result, consuming chickpeas may lead to constipation and gas.

It is also recommended to avoid stale and tamasic foods. Spiritually, Phalguna holds great importance, especially due to the festival of Maha Shivaratri, and the entire month is often associated with devotion to Lord Shiva. Hence, a light and sattvic diet is encouraged.


What to Eat During Phalguna

Seasonal fruits like jujube (ber) and grapes are considered beneficial during this month. These fruits help cool the stomach and purify the blood. They also protect the body against seasonal illnesses and strengthen immunity.

In addition, waking up early and engaging in regular exercise is considered highly beneficial. Aligning one’s diet and lifestyle with seasonal changes can help maintain good health naturally, without the need for medication. Dietary adjustments and a balanced lifestyle are key to sustaining energy and well-being.
