Mohammad Azharuddin: The Only Batsman in the World to Hold This Unique Record

New Delhi

Mohammad Azharuddin remains one of the most prominent names in Indian cricket, both as a stylish batsman and a former captain. Known for his elegant stroke play and exceptional wrist work, Azharuddin was a formidable middle-order batsman who strengthened India’s batting lineup in both Test and One Day International cricket during his era. Popularly referred to as the “Wizard of the Wrist,” he holds a unique record in world cricket that belongs to him alone.

Born on February 8, 1963, in Hyderabad, Mohammad Azharuddin made his international debut for India in 1985 against England at the age of 22, featuring in both Test and ODI formats.

Azharuddin is the only batsman in the history of cricket to score a century in one of the innings of each of his first three Test matches. This remarkable start to his Test career clearly indicated that he was destined for a long and successful journey in Indian cricket—and he lived up to that promise.

Between 1985 and 2000, Mohammad Azharuddin represented India in 99 Test matches and 334 One Day Internationals. In Tests, he amassed 6,215 runs, including 22 centuries and 21 half-centuries, with a highest score of 199.

In the ODI format, he scored 9,378 runs in 308 innings, registering 7 centuries and 58 half-centuries. His highest ODI score was an unbeaten 153. At the time of his retirement, Azharuddin was among the leading run-scorers in One Day International cricket.

Azharuddin captained India from 1990 to 1999, leading the team in 47 Test matches and 174 ODIs. Under his leadership, India won 14 Test matches and 90 One Day Internationals.

His illustrious cricketing career came to an abrupt end following allegations of match-fixing. After being cleared of the charges, Mohammad Azharuddin entered active politics. He currently serves as a Cabinet Minister in the Telangana government, holding the portfolios of Minority Welfare and Public Enterprises.
