Stroke, also known as a brain attack, is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. This disruption can damage brain cells, making every minute critical for survival and recovery. Health experts emphasize that the sooner a patient receives medical treatment, the higher the chances of recovery.
The National Health Mission (NHM) has advised people not to ignore the warning signs of stroke, highlighting that early identification and immediate action can save lives. To help people recognize symptoms quickly, NHM recommends remembering the simple and effective ‘BACHAAV’ formula, which makes it easier to identify the key signs of a stroke.
Medical experts say that delays in treatment can lead to permanent brain damage. Immediate hospitalization allows doctors to administer clot-busting medicines or other treatments that significantly improve recovery outcomes. To reduce the risk of stroke, individuals are advised to control blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, quit smoking and alcohol, exercise regularly, and maintain a balanced diet.
The ‘BACHAAV’ formula explains stroke symptoms in a simple way:
-
B – Bazu (Arm Weakness): Ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downward or feels weak, it could be a sign of stroke.
-
CH – Chehra (Face Drooping): Ask the person to smile. If one side of the face droops or looks uneven, it may indicate a stroke.
-
AA – Awaaz (Speech Difficulty): Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Slurred or unclear speech, or difficulty speaking, can signal danger.
-
V – Vakt (Time): If any of these symptoms appear, act immediately. Call 108 for an ambulance and rush the patient to the nearest hospital equipped with a CT scan, such as a district hospital or medical college.
Health experts also note that stroke symptoms usually appear suddenly and often affect one side of the body. Other warning signs may include sudden loss of balance, blurred vision, or a severe headache.
Stroke is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it can strike without warning. However, experts believe that the ‘BACHAAV’ formula can help identify more than 90 percent of stroke cases early, significantly improving chances of timely treatment and survival.
