From Petrochemical Chemist to Bollywood Star : The Inspiring Journey of Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Mumbai

Acclaimed Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is celebrated worldwide for his intense performances and unforgettable characters, but his journey to stardom was far from easy. Before entering the film industry, Nawazuddin worked as a chemist in a petrochemical company in Vadodara. Despite having a stable job, his passion for acting eventually led him to Mumbai and transformed him into one of India’s finest actors.

Born on May 19, 1974, in Budhana, a small town in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, Nawazuddin came from a modest farming family. His father was a farmer, and cinema was never considered a practical career option in his household. However, Nawazuddin developed a deep interest in films and acting from an early age.

After completing his graduation in science from Gurukul Kangri University, he moved to Vadodara in search of employment and began working as a chemist at a petrochemical company. Though the job provided financial stability, his heart remained drawn toward the world of performance and storytelling.

Determined to pursue acting, Nawazuddin left his job and shifted to Delhi, where he became involved in theatre. He later enrolled at the prestigious National School of Drama to formally study acting. Life during this period was extremely difficult, and to support himself financially, he even worked as a watchman while continuing theatre performances.

His struggle intensified after arriving in Mumbai. Initially, he received only tiny roles in films. He appeared briefly in movies like Sarfarosh, Shool, and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., but recognition remained elusive for years.

After nearly 12 to 15 years of struggle, Nawazuddin’s breakthrough finally came with Gangs of Wasseypur, directed by Anurag Kashyap. His portrayal of Faizal Khan turned him into an overnight sensation and established him as a powerhouse performer in Indian cinema.

Following the success of Gangs of Wasseypur, he delivered critically acclaimed performances in films like The Lunchbox, Kick, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Raman Raghav 2.0, Manto, and Raat Akeli Hai. He also earned widespread praise for his role in the hit web series Sacred Games.

Over the years, Nawazuddin has received several prestigious honours, including a Special Jury Award at the National Film Awards. His performances in films such as Manto and Raman Raghav 2.0 have also earned international acclaim, cementing his reputation as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
