The world of Indian cinema has seen many talented actresses, but few stories are as inspiring as that of Meenu Mumtaz—a stunning performer whose beauty, dance, and acting won hearts, while her life stood as a symbol of struggle and resilience. Interestingly, her brother, legendary comedian Mehmood Ali, lovingly called her “Bhai” (brother), a reflection of her strength and responsibility toward the family.

Born on April 26, 1942, in Mumbai as Malikunnisa, Meenu was the youngest in a large family. Her father, Mumtaz Ali, was a well-known actor and dancer of his time. However, due to his struggle with alcoholism, the family faced severe financial hardships, often leaving the children hungry.

From a very young age, Meenu performed in stage shows alongside her father. Realizing the family’s condition, she decided to work in films as well, becoming a pillar of support for her loved ones.

Meenu got her first break in 1955 with the film Sakhi Hatim (often cited as her early project), but it was Guru Dutt’s 1956 classic CID that brought her widespread recognition.

In 1963, Mehmood arranged her marriage with filmmaker Syed Ali Akbar. The couple had four children. In her later years, Meenu moved to Canada, where she spent the final phase of her life.

She passed away on October 23, 2021, at the age of 79 due to age-related health issues.
