The T20 World Cup witnessed its first major upset as Zimbabwe defeated Australia by 23 runs, creating history in the tournament. This is Zimbabwe’s second win over the Kangaroos, the first being in the 2007 league round.
At R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Zimbabwe scored 169 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 20 overs. The highlight of the innings was Bryan Bennett, who remained unbeaten on 64 runs off 56 balls. In addition, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl contributed 35 runs each, while captain Sikandar Raza scored an unbeaten 25 off 13 balls to give the team a strong finish.
In response, Australia was bowled out for 146 in 19.3 overs. Matt Renshaw scored 65 runs and Glenn Maxwell made 31, but Marcus Stoinis (6), Travis Head (17), and Josh Inglis (8) failed to make significant contributions. Tim David and Cameron Green couldn’t score at all. Blessing Muzarabani starred for Zimbabwe, taking 4 crucial wickets.
Australia also faced injury concerns during the match, as Marcus Stoinis left the field midway after hurting his hand while stopping a ball.
