Race walking is a unique track and field discipline in which athletes move at high speed while maintaining continuous contact with the ground, unlike running. In this demanding sport, Indian athlete Priyanka Goswami has made the country proud by winning medals and representing India on major international stages.
Early Life and Inspiration
Priyanka Goswami was born on March 10, 1996, in Muzaffarnagar. Coming from a lower-middle-class family, she faced several challenges while pursuing a career in sports.
Before entering athletics, Priyanka practiced gymnastics in school for a few months. Interestingly, she initially became interested in running because winners in school races were rewarded with school bags, which motivated her to compete.
Rise in Race Walking
Priyanka’s breakthrough came in 2017, when she won the Indian Racewalking Championship.
In February 2021, she again won the championship in the 20 km race walk, setting a new national record of 1:28:45. This outstanding performance also helped her qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Olympic and International Performances
Priyanka represented India in both the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Tokyo Olympics: Finished 17th in the race walk event.
Paris Olympics: Finished 41st.
Despite the tough competition, her participation highlighted India’s growing presence in race walking on the global stage.
Historic Commonwealth Games Medal
One of Priyanka’s biggest achievements came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she won a silver medal in the 10 km race walk.
She became the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal in race walking at the Commonwealth Games.
Other Major Achievements
2023 Bangkok race walking event: Won silver in the 20 km race walk.
2021 Summer World University Games: Won bronze medal in the 20 km race walk.
2025 Austrian Racewalking Championship (Innsbruck): Won gold in the women’s 10 km race walk with a time of 47:54.
Priyanka also set a new national record in the 35 km race walk at the Dudinska 50, finishing the race in 2 hours 56 minutes 34 seconds.
Looking Ahead
Currently working with Indian Railways, Priyanka Goswami continues to train with the goal of delivering even better performances for India on the international stage.
Her journey—from a young girl motivated by school prizes to becoming one of India’s top race walkers—remains an inspiring story for aspiring athletes across the country.
