Rohit Sharma Recovering Quickly, Decision on CSK Match to Be Taken on Match Day: Jayawardene

Chennai

Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has confirmed that opener Rohit Sharma is steadily recovering from a hamstring injury. The franchise’s medical team will take a final call on his inclusion for the match against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium on match day.

Rohit has played only four matches so far this season. After missing the last four games due to injury, the former captain was seen batting in the nets in Chennai on Friday, indicating positive progress in his recovery.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Jayawardene said Rohit’s condition has improved significantly and that he is working hard to return to the field. He emphasized that the decision will depend on daily assessments by the medical team, taking into account how Rohit feels and responds physically after training sessions.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ campaign in Indian Premier League 2026 has been underwhelming so far. The five-time champions have managed only two wins in eight matches and currently sit ninth on the points table. To remain in contention for the playoffs, the team must win all their remaining matches.

Jayawardene admitted that the team has faced multiple challenges, including injuries and player availability issues. He noted that Mumbai Indians have already fielded around 20 players this season—significantly higher than their usual rotation of 16–17 players—even after the introduction of the Impact Player rule. This has forced the team to rely heavily on its bench strength.

Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in the squad, particularly the overseas players, who have stepped up as valuable options. He added that the team has been continuously adjusting its combination based on the situation and player availability.
