Not Just Earthen Pots, Clay Bottles and Glasses Also Offer Natural Cooling and Enhanced Taste

New Delhi

As intense heat continues to grip many parts of the country, with temperatures soaring up to 45 degrees Celsius, people are increasingly turning to traditional earthenware as an alternative to electrically powered coolers and refrigerators. Besides the conventional earthen pot, clay bottles, kulhads, and clay glasses are gaining popularity for their ability to provide natural cooling while enhancing the taste of water and beverages.

Earthenware naturally keeps water cool during the summer months. The moisture present in clay allows evaporation to take place, which lowers the temperature of the stored water. Water kept in clay containers not only remains cool but also absorbs beneficial minerals from the clay. Compared to plastic or steel containers, earthen vessels help keep water chemical-free and improve its taste.

The National Health Mission (NHM) highlights several benefits of using clay utensils. These containers can cool water naturally without electricity, often keeping it 8–10 degrees cooler than the surrounding temperature. Water stored in clay vessels is considered alkaline in nature, which may help reduce acidity and support digestive health. Moreover, drinking tea, buttermilk, or juice from a kulhad adds a distinctive earthy aroma that enhances the overall drinking experience.

Health experts recommend opting for water and beverages stored in clay containers instead of consuming cold soft drinks during the summer. This practice can help prevent dehydration and digestive issues commonly associated with extreme heat. Water stored in earthenware helps cool the body, reducing heat-related fatigue and discomfort. Additionally, clay products are fully biodegradable and contribute to reducing plastic pollution.

Clay bottles are also highly convenient for carrying water while traveling, commuting, or working in an office. They help keep water cool and fresh for longer periods. Kulhads are generally designed for single use, offering both hygiene and a unique flavor experience. Meanwhile, a traditional earthen pot remains an excellent option for providing naturally cool drinking water for the entire family.
