Jerusalem/Washington: Tensions in the Middle East continue to remain high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. While officials in the United States have reached an understanding on the implementation of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, renewed violence in Gaza Strip and broader regional conflicts involving Iran have cast uncertainty over prospects for lasting peace.
Israeli Airstrikes Kill Nine in Gaza
According to reports from Gaza City, Israeli warplanes carried out four airstrikes on residential apartment buildings during the night. The attacks reportedly occurred without prior warning while residents were asleep.
Hospital sources at Al-Shifa Hospital said that at least nine Palestinians, including four children, were killed in the strikes.
The attacks also triggered major fires in several buildings, leaving families trapped inside. Rescue teams reportedly pulled out multiple survivors suffering from severe burn injuries, while emergency operations continued in affected areas.
Local authorities in Gaza have claimed that Israel has violated the ceasefire announced last year on thousands of occasions, resulting in significant casualties. These claims have not been independently verified.
Washington Talks Focus on Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire
In Washington, U.S. officials hosted trilateral discussions involving representatives from Israel and Lebanon aimed at reinforcing an existing ceasefire framework.
American officials emphasized that the discussions did not create a new ceasefire agreement but reaffirmed commitments made under a previous arrangement reached in May.
Under the understanding, fighters from Hezbollah are expected to withdraw from areas south of the Litani River. Plans were also discussed to establish designated security zones where only the official Lebanese Armed Forces would maintain a presence.
Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, reportedly stated that a durable ceasefire would require the complete disarmament of Hezbollah.
Analysts note that Hezbollah is likely to seek guarantees regarding Lebanon’s sovereignty and future Israeli military activity before accepting any long-term arrangement.
U.S. House Passes Measure Limiting Presidential War Powers
Amid escalating tensions involving Iran, the United States House of Representatives approved a resolution aimed at limiting the war powers of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The measure passed by a vote of 215 to 208 and seeks to require the withdrawal of U.S. military forces from unauthorized hostilities involving Iran. Four Republican lawmakers reportedly joined Democrats in supporting the proposal.
The resolution reflects growing debate within Washington over the scope of presidential authority in military conflicts.
Ceasefire Hopes Push Oil Prices Lower
News of diplomatic progress between Israel and Lebanon had an immediate impact on global energy markets.
Benchmark crude oil prices declined as investors responded to expectations that regional tensions could ease.
- Brent Crude fell by approximately 0.69 percent to $97.14 per barrel.
- West Texas Intermediate declined by around 0.65 percent to $95.40 per barrel.
Market analysts said the possibility of reduced geopolitical risk helped ease concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.
Germany Falls Short in UN Security Council Vote
Former United Nations human rights official Craig Mokhiber described Germany’s failure to secure sufficient support in a recent election for a seat on the United Nations Security Council as a significant development.
According to reports, Germany received 104 votes, falling short of the two-thirds majority required for election.
Mokhiber argued that dissatisfaction with Germany’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and concerns regarding its treatment of pro-Palestinian activists contributed to the outcome. However, voting decisions by UN member states often reflect a combination of diplomatic, political, and regional considerations.
