FIFA World Cup 2026 : Ronaldo Creates History as Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan 5-0, Becomes First Player to Score in Six World Cups

Houston (USA): Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo once again etched his name into the record books as Portugal demolished Uzbekistan 5-0 in a Group K clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 41-year-old captain produced a masterclass, scoring twice and rewriting several World Cup records in the process.

The emphatic victory has significantly strengthened Portugal’s chances of reaching the Round of 32. With four points from two matches, Portugal now sit atop Group K.

Ronaldo Makes History in the Sixth Minute

Portugal began the contest on an attacking note and needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. Joao Cancelo surged down the right flank and delivered a precise low cross into the penalty area. Ronaldo, positioned perfectly inside the six-yard box, calmly slotted the ball into the net.

The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the stadium because it made Ronaldo the first player in football history to score in six different FIFA World Cup editions — 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026.

Having made his World Cup debut at the age of 21 in Germany in 2006, Ronaldo has now scored in every World Cup tournament he has participated in.

The achievement came just a day after Argentine superstar Lionel Messi reportedly became the highest goal-scorer in World Cup history following his strike against Austria, adding another chapter to the long-standing rivalry between the two football icons.

Portugal’s Dominance Leaves Uzbekistan Helpless

Portugal’s relentless attacking football left Uzbekistan’s defence in complete disarray.

  • 17th minute: Nuno Mendes doubled Portugal’s lead with a powerful free-kick, making it 2-0.
  • 29th minute: Uzbekistan thought they had pulled one back when Azizjon Ganiev found the net, but the effort was ruled out for a foul.
  • 39th minute: Ronaldo struck again, slicing through the Uzbek defence to score his second goal of the evening and Portugal’s third, giving his side a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime.
  • Second half: Continued pressure forced an unfortunate own goal from Uzbekistan, extending Portugal’s advantage to 4-0.
  • 87th minute: Rafael Leao added the finishing touch by scoring Portugal’s fifth goal to complete the rout.

Ronaldo Surpasses Eusebio’s Historic Record

Ronaldo’s second goal of the match also saw him surpass legendary Portuguese icon Eusebio as Portugal’s highest scorer in FIFA World Cup history.

Eusebio had scored nine World Cup goals, while Ronaldo now has 10 World Cup goals, making him the country’s all-time leading scorer on football’s biggest stage.

Despite the numerous records to his name, Ronaldo is still chasing another milestone—his first goal in a World Cup knockout match. He has also never played in a World Cup final.

However, with the expanded 48-team format and Portugal’s impressive form, fans believe the legendary forward could finally rewrite those chapters of his illustrious career.

Ronaldo: Team Success Matters More Than Records

Portugal had come under scrutiny after opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, and Ronaldo himself faced criticism for his performance.

After the victory, the Portuguese captain remained grounded.

“Records are always nice and I am very happy, but for me, the success of the team is far more important than individual achievements. Today, we played with confidence and unity. My only objective is to help my national team achieve its goals.”

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez also praised his team’s response after the disappointing start.

“We received exactly the reaction we wanted from the dressing room. Sometimes a difficult first game is necessary in a major tournament. The players showed the same commitment but with much greater maturity today. I am extremely pleased with both the performance and the result.”

With Ronaldo continuing to defy age and create history, Portugal’s dominant victory has sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament—the European giants are once again serious contenders for football’s biggest prize.
