Santa Clara: Qatar secured a historic point at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Switzerland in California on Saturday. A stoppage-time equalizer from Boualem Khoukhi helped Qatar earn their first-ever World Cup point on foreign soil.
Switzerland started the match on the front foot, dominating possession and creating several attacking opportunities. Their pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Qatar defender Mahmoud Abunada brought down Remo Freuler inside the penalty area.
The referee immediately pointed to the spot, and Swiss striker Breel Embolo made no mistake from the penalty, calmly converting to give Switzerland a 1-0 lead.
The Swiss side continued to threaten throughout the first half. Dan Ndoye consistently troubled Qatar’s defense, while Michel Aebischer came close to extending the lead.
Qatar, however, showed flashes of danger on the counterattack. Edmilson Junior had a golden opportunity to equalize early in the match, but his effort was brilliantly denied by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Kobel also produced another important save to stop Edmilson before halftime.
The pace of the game slowed somewhat in the second half, but Switzerland remained in control and appeared set to claim all three points. Late chances for Ruben Vargas and Embolo could have doubled Switzerland’s advantage, but both players failed to convert.
Those missed opportunities proved costly.
Just as Switzerland seemed destined for victory, Qatar struck in the fourth minute of injury time. Homam Ahmed delivered an excellent cross from the left flank, and Boualem Khoukhi rose highest in the penalty area to power a header over Kobel and into the net.
The dramatic goal leveled the score at 1-1 and sparked celebrations among the Qatari players and supporters.
The result marked a significant milestone for Qatar, as the nation collected its first World Cup point away from home. For Switzerland, the draw felt like a missed opportunity after controlling much of the contest and creating the better chances.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Swiss veterans Ricardo Rodriguez and Granit Xhaka reached an important personal milestone by making their 13th FIFA World Cup appearances.
For Qatar, however, the draw felt almost like a victory. The historic point keeps their hopes of progressing to the next stage alive and adds a memorable chapter to the country’s World Cup journey.
