Home-cooked food is often considered the healthiest option, but simply cooking at home is not enough. Food becomes truly healthy only when it is prepared using the right methods. It’s not just about choosing good ingredients—the way you cook them plays an equally important role. Incorrect cooking techniques can reduce the nutritional value of even the healthiest foods.
According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, home food is beneficial only when cooked properly. Many people unknowingly make mistakes while cooking, which leads to a loss of nutrients, turning the meal into something that only fills the stomach rather than nourishing the body.
One common mistake is overcooking vegetables. Boiling them for too long can destroy essential vitamins and minerals. Instead, lightly steaming or cooking them with minimal water helps retain both nutrients and taste. Avoid over-softening vegetables to keep their nutritional value intact.
Another important factor is the use of oil. Excessive oil makes food heavy and unhealthy. Always use oil in moderation and avoid reheating the same oil multiple times, as it can produce harmful compounds.
Soaking pulses and grains before cooking is also beneficial. It helps them cook faster and makes digestion easier. Foods like chickpeas and moong become even more nutritious when sprouted.
While juices are popular, eating whole fruits is a better choice. Whole fruits contain fiber, which aids digestion and keeps you full for longer. Therefore, prefer fruits over juices whenever possible.
Using spices wisely is equally important. Too many spices can make food heavy, while balanced seasoning enhances both taste and health benefits.
Lastly, try to consume freshly prepared meals. Food that is cooked long in advance or reheated multiple times may lose some of its nutritional value.
