As temperatures continue to rise across the country, the risk of heat stroke is increasing significantly. With heat waves becoming more frequent, health experts are urging people to take precautions to stay safe during extreme weather conditions.
Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature rises rapidly and the body loses its ability to cool itself. It can be life-threatening, making awareness and prevention extremely important during the summer season.
According to the National Health Mission, timely precautions and basic first aid can help prevent this serious condition. Special care should be taken for children, elderly individuals, and those with existing health issues, as they are more vulnerable to extreme heat.
Experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM. Staying hydrated is crucial—drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid beverages high in caffeine or sugar, such as soft drinks, tea, and coffee, as they can lead to dehydration.
Wearing light-colored, loose, and breathable cotton clothing can help keep the body cool, while dark-colored clothes tend to absorb more heat. If you must work outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas every 15–20 minutes.
In case of heat stroke symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, high fever, unconsciousness, or a sudden rise in body temperature, immediate action is necessary. Move the affected person to a cool and ventilated place, apply cold compresses or sponge the body with cool water—especially on the neck, wrists, and soles of the feet. Offer small sips of cool water and, once stable, provide light, hydrating foods or fruits.
Taking simple precautions can go a long way in protecting yourself and your family from the dangers of extreme heat.
