New Delhi:
In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, dependence on machines and modern conveniences is steadily increasing. While these facilities offer comfort, they are also reducing people’s physical activity. One common example is the growing use of lifts and escalators, which has led many people to avoid climbing stairs. However, health experts believe that choosing stairs over lifts can significantly improve overall fitness and well-being.
According to the National Health Mission (NHM), small daily habits can lead to major positive changes in health and lifestyle. The organization has advised people to prefer stairs instead of lifts as part of a healthier daily routine.
NHM stated that starting the day by climbing stairs can help improve fitness levels, boost energy, and contribute to a healthier life. Every step taken on the stairs helps the body stay active and promotes long-term wellness.
The organization noted that in today’s busy lifestyle, most people rely heavily on lifts. However, developing the habit of climbing stairs can offer several health benefits and help prevent serious illnesses over time.
Experts say stair climbing is an excellent form of exercise that requires no equipment. It strengthens leg muscles, helps maintain body weight, and improves stamina and endurance.
Regular stair climbing also supports heart health, helps control blood pressure, and maintains balanced cholesterol levels. In addition, it keeps the body energetic and active throughout the day.
Health specialists further explained that maintaining an “active body” depends largely on small lifestyle habits. Climbing stairs regularly can improve cardiovascular health, increase energy and flexibility, strengthen bones and muscles, aid weight management, reduce breathing-related problems, lower stress levels, and improve overall mood.
The National Health Mission has appealed to people to choose stairs wherever possible. For those working in high-rise buildings, experts recommend starting by climbing at least a few floors daily and gradually increasing the habit over time.
