Sweet Tulsi (Stevia): A Naturally Sweet Herb with Multiple Summer Health Benefits

New Delhi

Known for its deep cultural and medicinal significance, Tulsi has long been a staple in Indian households. However, a lesser-known variety, commonly referred to as “Sweet Tulsi,” is gaining attention for its remarkable health benefits, especially during the summer season.

Popularly known as Stevia, this plant is widely used in Ayurveda and is considered particularly beneficial for people with diabetes. Despite being nearly 30 times sweeter than sugar, it does not raise blood glucose levels, as it contains neither glucose nor sucrose.

According to Ayurvedic principles, Sweet Tulsi helps in balancing “pitta” and provides a cooling effect on the body. During hot weather, it can be consumed as a refreshing drink made from its leaves to help reduce acidity and soothe stomach irritation.

One of its key advantages is its ability to curb sugar cravings without adding calories, making it a suitable option for weight management. Unlike refined sugar, stevia also possesses antibacterial properties, which may help protect teeth from decay and cavities.

Additionally, the herb may assist in regulating blood pressure, particularly in cases where it tends to drop during extreme heat. Its cooling nature helps maintain overall body temperature and hydration levels.

Sweet Tulsi is also known to support digestion, relieve constipation, and improve gut health. The presence of antioxidants further contributes to healthier skin by helping combat various skin issues.

Health experts suggest that while stevia can be beneficial, it should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
