Mahua Moitra Calls Notification of Women’s Reservation Law a ‘Comedy of Errors’

New Delhi

The political debate over the Women’s Reservation Law intensified on Friday, with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra sharply criticizing the central government over the recent notification and its linkage with delimitation.

Speaking to the media, Moitra said that women in the country are not naïve enough to accept the government’s attempt to connect an already passed law with unrelated processes like delimitation. She alleged that the Centre is trying to merge two separate issues, which were never intended to be linked.

Referring to the notification of the Women’s Reservation Act 2023, she termed the move a “comedy of errors.” According to Moitra, it appeared as though the Law Ministry suddenly realized that the bill had not even been formally notified before discussions on amendments began, leading to a hurried issuance of the notification.

She also raised concerns over the basis of implementation, pointing out inconsistencies regarding whether the law would rely on the latest census or the 2011 data.

Meanwhile, fellow TMC MP Kirti Azad questioned the timing of the move, stating that introducing such measures during ongoing elections was unnecessary and politically motivated.

Congress leaders also joined the criticism. MP Imran Masood emphasized that a proper census should precede delimitation and related reforms, accusing the government of prioritizing optics over procedure. Another Congress MP, Varun Chaudhary, argued that the bill was more about delimitation than genuine women’s reservation.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, however, has maintained that the law is a significant step toward enhancing women’s representation in politics, even as opposition parties continue to question its intent and execution.
