Mumbai
Remembering B. R. Chopra on his birth anniversary, the legendary filmmaker is celebrated for blending entertainment with powerful social messages. While he delivered classics like Naya Daur, Kanoon, and Nikaah, his 1958 film Sadhana remains one of the most courageous projects of his career.
A Bold Subject That Shocked the Industry
Sadhana revolved around the life and rehabilitation of a sex worker—an extremely sensitive and unconventional subject at the time. When Chopra announced the film, distributors reportedly warned him of financial ruin, citing earlier failures of films on similar themes.
Despite the pressure, Chopra stood firm, stating that he believed in the story and its message, choosing conviction over commercial fear.
A Powerful Climax That Redefined Social Thinking
Unsatisfied with the original ending, Chopra collaborated with writer Mukhram Sharma to craft a stronger, more impactful climax. The emotional final scene—where a mother स्वीकार करती है her daughter-in-law’s past and refuses to let society reject her—left audiences deeply moved and sparked widespread applause in theatres.
Music and Message That Resonated with Masses
The film became a major success, drawing large female audiences to theatres like Maratha Mandir. Its iconic song “Aurat Ne Janam Diya Mardon Ko”, written by Sahir Ludhianvi, remains relevant even today for its bold commentary on gender inequality.
