Mexico City
History was made at the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Mexico City Stadium as 17-year-old Gilberto Mora etched his name into Mexican football folklore. By stepping onto the field, Mora became the youngest player ever to represent Mexico at a FIFA World Cup.
The historic moment came in the 65th minute when Mora was called off the bench. His introduction was met with thunderous applause from the home crowd, including boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez. At the age of 17 years and 240 days, Mora became the sixth-youngest player to appear in a FIFA World Cup match.
He joins an elite list of teenage footballers that includes Pelé (17 years, 235 days), Salomon Olembe (17 years, 185 days), Femi Opabunmi (17 years, 101 days), Samuel Eto’o (17 years, 99 days), and Norman Whiteside (17 years, 41 days), all of whom featured on football’s biggest stage as teenagers.
Born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and raised in Tijuana, Mora made his professional debut just two months before turning 16. He attracted widespread attention with his impressive performances at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Chile 2025, where Mexico reached the quarterfinals and the young midfielder displayed maturity far beyond his years.
Mora’s senior international debut came during the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025. Head coach Javier Aguirre showed faith in the youngster, and Mora quickly justified that trust with outstanding performances.
He made his debut against Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals, becoming the youngest footballer ever to represent Mexico’s senior national team. In the semifinal, he played a key role in creating the decisive goal for Raúl Jiménez.
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder is highly regarded for his ability to read the game, find space between defensive lines, escape pressure, and deliver precise passes at the right moment. Beyond his exceptional technical skills, Mora is admired for his composure, creativity, courage, and football intelligence—qualities rarely seen in players of his age.
