Los Angeles:
Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei has expressed frustration over a sudden change in his team’s travel arrangements following a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their opening Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Ghalenoei said the Iranian team was unexpectedly instructed to leave Los Angeles immediately after the match and return to its training base in Tijuana, Mexico. According to him, the team had initially been informed that it could remain in the United States until lunchtime on Tuesday before returning to camp.
“After the match, we were told that we had to leave immediately. We were asked to board a flight and return to our camp in Tijuana. We are unhappy with this decision because it makes the situation more difficult for us,” Ghalenoei said.
The coach also claimed that Iran had faced several logistical and administrative challenges during its World Cup preparations. He alleged that the team was not permitted to arrive at the venue as early as planned and described Iran as one of the most affected teams in the tournament in terms of operational difficulties.
“We were supposed to arrive two nights before the match, but that was not allowed. Our federation is not here, our media is not here, and our management is not here. We have faced many challenges throughout this process,” he added.
Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi also voiced concerns about the situation, saying that the uncertainty and travel issues have created stress for both players and support staff.
“It is a major concern for the players and staff. We are tired of dealing with these circumstances, and naturally it affects the team,” Taremi said.
Iran’s participation in the tournament has been overshadowed by uncertainty linked to ongoing tensions and security concerns in the Middle East. Following the match, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reportedly visited Iran’s dressing room and met with players.
Iran will continue its Group G campaign against Belgium on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, with travel and logistical concerns likely to remain a talking point ahead of the fixture.
