Canada delivered a dominant performance to register a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Qatar in the FIFA World Cup 2026 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. However, the match ended on a controversial note as players and staff members from both teams became involved in an on-field altercation after the final whistle.
The incident began immediately after the match ended. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch approached Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui for a handshake, but an argument reportedly broke out between the two. Marsch’s seemingly cold behaviour did not sit well with Qatar’s bench players.
The situation quickly escalated into a heated exchange involving players and staff from both teams, eventually turning into pushing and shoving. Security personnel had to intervene to separate the two sides.
Reports suggested that Canadian players were furious after midfielder Ismael Kone suffered an injury following a challenge by Qatar’s Asim Madibo. The anger surrounding the incident appeared to trigger the post-match confrontation.
Early in the second half, Kone was badly injured following Madibo’s dangerous tackle and had to be stretchered off the field. Canadian players looked visibly emotional as they watched their teammate leave the pitch in pain. The referee showed Madibo a straight red card for the challenge.
Substitute Jacob Shaffelburg, who replaced Kone, celebrated his goal by waving Kone’s jersey in the air in a show of support. Reduced to 10 men after Madibo’s dismissal, Qatar struggled to contain Canada, who fully capitalised on their numerical advantage.
Jonathan David starred for Canada by scoring a hat-trick as the hosts secured an emphatic 6-0 win. The victory also marked Canada’s first-ever win in FIFA World Cup history. With four points from two matches, Canada significantly strengthened its hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
