FIFA World Cup: Tempers Flare After Canada Crush Qatar 6-0, Players Clash on Pitch After Final Whistle

New Delhi

Canada produced a commanding display to defeat Qatar 6-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. However, the match ended in controversy as players and staff members from both teams were involved in an on-field altercation after the final whistle.

The incident began immediately after the match ended. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch approached Qatar manager Julen Lopetegui for a customary handshake, but the exchange quickly turned into an argument. Marsch’s apparent cold behaviour reportedly did not go down well with players on Qatar’s bench.

The situation escalated rapidly, with players and staff from both teams engaging in a heated verbal exchange that eventually turned into pushing and shoving. Security personnel had to step in and separate the two sides.

The confrontation was reportedly triggered by the injury suffered by Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone following a challenge from Qatar’s Asim Madibo. Canadian players were said to be furious over the incident.

Early in the second half, Kone was badly injured after Madibo’s dangerous tackle and had to be stretchered off the field. Canadian players looked visibly emotional as they watched their teammate leave the pitch in pain. The referee immediately showed Madibo a straight red card for the challenge.

Jacob Shaffelburg, who came on as a substitute for Kone, later scored and celebrated by waving Kone’s jersey in the air as a gesture of support. Reduced to 10 men after Madibo’s dismissal, Qatar struggled to cope, and Canada took full advantage of the numerical superiority.

Jonathan David starred for Canada, scoring a hat-trick as the hosts secured a resounding 6-0 victory. The win was also Canada’s first-ever triumph in FIFA World Cup history. With four points from two matches, Canada significantly boosted its hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.
