New Delhi
Ahead of Kolkata Knight Riders’ crucial IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals, KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo expressed confidence in spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, stating that he never doubted the mystery spinner’s wicket-taking ability.
Varun had a difficult start to the season, going wicketless in the first three matches while also conceding runs at a high rate. During that phase, Kolkata Knight Riders also struggled badly in the tournament. However, the spinner has bounced back strongly, playing a key role in KKR’s recent revival.
Kolkata have now won their last three matches, with Varun delivering match-winning spells in the process. The spinner has picked up 10 wickets in seven matches this season, including two separate three-wicket hauls in the last three games.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bravo said that mental and physical rest is extremely important for players participating in a long tournament like the IPL. He explained that Varun had recently returned after playing the World Cup and natural fatigue affected his rhythm early in the season.
Bravo added that every player goes through difficult phases, but quality players always find a way to return stronger. According to him, the team management and players continued to support Varun fully, which helped maintain his confidence.
The former all-rounder also shared an update on Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, saying the fast bowler is close to returning but the franchise does not want to rush his comeback. He said captain Ajinkya Rahane and the coaching staff will decide the right time for his return.
Bravo also praised young fast bowler Kartik Tyagi for his dedication and willingness to learn. He revealed that Tyagi has been working hard in the nets and the coaching staff is helping him improve not only his bowling skills but also his tactical understanding of the game.
According to Bravo, successful bowling is not just about using slower deliveries, but also about understanding when and against which batter those variations should be used. He believes KKR’s young bowling group is energetic, hardworking and eager to improve, which gives the team confidence for the upcoming matches.
