South Africa and the West Indies are set to face off in a crucial Super-8 encounter of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. Both teams will aim to secure a victory to strengthen their semifinal prospects.
While South Africa defeated India in their opening Super-8 match, the West Indies registered a win over Zimbabwe. However, much of the spotlight will be on West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer, who stands on the brink of a historic milestone.
One Six Away from Record
Hetmyer has been in sensational form throughout the tournament. In the match against Zimbabwe, he smashed 85 runs off just 34 balls, including seven sixes and seven fours, playing a pivotal role in his team’s victory.
The left-handed batter has already struck 17 sixes in five innings in the ongoing World Cup. If he hits one more six against the South Africa national cricket team, he will become the player with the most sixes in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.
Currently, Hetmyer shares the top spot with his compatriot Nicholas Pooran, who smashed 17 sixes during the 2024 T20 World Cup. The next names on the list include Chris Gayle, who hit 16 sixes in 2012, and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who also recorded 16 sixes in the 2024 edition.
Stellar Tournament So Far
The 29-year-old has scored 219 runs in five innings at an impressive average of 54.75 and a blistering strike rate of 185.59, including two half-centuries.
Regarded as one of the most explosive batters in the T20 format, Hetmyer features in major T20 leagues worldwide. For the West Indies cricket team, he has amassed 1,564 runs in 80 T20 internationals (70 innings), with nine half-centuries to his name.
He has smashed 97 sixes in T20 internationals so far. If he manages three sixes against South Africa, he will become the fifth West Indies batter to reach the 100-sixes milestone in T20Is.
With history within touching distance, all eyes will be on Hetmyer as the West Indies seek a crucial win in Ahmedabad.
