A major upset was narrowly avoided at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday as England defeated Nepal by just four runs in a thrilling Group C match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Chasing a target of 185 runs, Nepal put up a spirited fight but fell agonisingly short, managing 180 runs for six wickets in 20 overs. Nepal needed 10 runs in the final over, but could score only five as England held their nerve to clinch a dramatic victory.
England’s Sam Curran bowled the final over and used all his international and league cricket experience to defend the total under immense pressure.
Nepal’s Brave Chase Falls Just Short
Nepal showed remarkable resilience against one of world cricket’s strongest teams.
Kushal Bhurtel scored 29 off 17 balls
Captain Rohit Paudel made 39 off 34 balls
Dipendra Singh Airee played a brilliant knock of 44 off 29 balls
Lokesh Bam added quick runs with 39 off 20 balls
Despite the valiant effort, Nepal remained just one big shot away from a historic win.
While lack of experience at the international level and limited exposure against top teams proved costly, the rising Asian side impressed everyone with their fearless batting and fighting spirit, pushing England till the very last ball.
England’s Bowling Effort
For England, Liam Dawson picked up two wickets, while Luke Wood, Jofra Archer, Will Jacks, and Sam Curran claimed one wicket each.

Earlier, after winning the toss, England opted to bat first and posted 184 runs for seven wickets.
Jacob Bethell smashed 55 off 35 balls, hitting four sixes and four fours
Captain Harry Brook scored 53 off 32 balls with three sixes and four boundaries
Will Jacks, batting at number seven, hammered 39 off just 18 balls with four sixes
Jos Buttler chipped in with 26 off 17 balls
Will Jacks was adjudged Player of the Match for his impactful all-round performance.
England eventually crossed the line, but Nepal’s fearless display ensured this contest will be remembered as one of the most thrilling matches of the T20 World Cup 2026.
