Mumbai:
Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has reflected on the enduring legacy of his iconic character Tara Singh as the blockbuster film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha celebrates its 25th anniversary.
Produced under the banner of Zee Studios, the film will receive a special anniversary telecast on Zee Cinema and Zee Bollywood on June 15. Despite facing strong box-office competition from Lagaan, starring Aamir Khan, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha went on to become one of the biggest blockbusters in Hindi cinema history and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences.
Speaking to IANS, Sunny Deol said that the character of Tara Singh gave him a unique and lasting connection with moviegoers.
“Tara Singh gave me a bond with audiences that has only grown stronger with time. Even after 25 years, the love people have for Gadar feels just as overwhelming. There can be no greater honor for an actor. I thank the people of India for this affection. Hindustan Zindabad tha, Hindustan Zindabad hai, aur Hindustan Zindabad rahega,” he said.
Actress Ameesha Patel, who portrayed Sakina in the film, described the role as one of the most memorable achievements of her career.
“Even after 25 years, seeing audiences celebrate Sakina and this story is an incredibly emotional experience. Gadar will always remain very close to my heart,” she said.
Director Anil Sharma said the film was made with complete faith in its emotions, storytelling, and message.
“Gadar was created with conviction, emotion, and belief in the power of storytelling. Audiences turned it into something much bigger than just a film. Their love, even after 25 years, humbles all of us,” Sharma remarked.
Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha combined themes of love, sacrifice, family values, and patriotism in a way that resonated deeply with audiences across generations. Its memorable characters, powerful dialogues, and iconic scenes continue to remain etched in popular memory.
A quarter-century after its release, the film remains one of the most celebrated milestones in Indian cinema and a defining chapter in the careers of its cast and creators.
