When discussing the actresses who left an everlasting impact on Indian cinema through their exceptional performances, the name of Nutan stands out prominently. Even today, Nutan is remembered as a symbol of graceful acting and simplicity. Born on June 4, 1936, she entered the world of films at a very young age and went on to deliver some of the most memorable performances in the history of Indian cinema.
Considered one of the most talented actresses of Hindi cinema, Nutan continues to be remembered with immense respect. Her natural acting style, powerful dialogue delivery, and remarkable ability to portray emotions earned her admiration from both audiences and critics. Her performances in films such as Sujata, Seema, Bandini, and Milan are still regarded as benchmarks of excellence.
Born on June 4, 1936, to actress Shobhana Samarth and filmmaker-poet Kumarsen Samarth, Nutan was the eldest of four siblings. Growing up in a family deeply connected to the arts, she was naturally drawn to acting. Her mother, Shobhana Samarth, was one of the leading actresses of her era and was especially renowned for portraying the role of Sita in mythological films.
Nutan’s film career began at the age of just 14. In 1950, her mother produced the film Hamari Beti, which marked Nutan’s debut in the film industry. During her teenage years, she attracted attention for her talent, beauty, and personality, eventually winning the Miss India title at the age of 16.
Although she appeared in several films during the early years of her career, her breakthrough came with the release of Seema in 1955. Her powerful performance received widespread acclaim and earned her her first Filmfare Best Actress Award.
Nutan’s career reached new heights with Sujata (1959), a film that remains one of the most significant milestones in her journey. Addressing themes of social discrimination and human compassion, the film featured one of her most challenging and celebrated performances. Her portrayal was so impactful that the film continues to be regarded as a classic of Hindi cinema. She was honored with another Filmfare Award for her role.
In 1963, Bandini elevated Nutan to even greater artistic heights. Her portrayal of the complex emotional world of a woman is still considered one of the finest performances in Indian cinematic history.
Alongside intense and emotionally driven roles, Nutan also excelled in romantic and light-hearted films. She starred opposite Dev Anand in Paying Guest and alongside Raj Kapoor in Anari and Chhalia. Her performance in the musical drama Sone Ki Chidiya was also widely appreciated. Another memorable success was Tere Ghar Ke Samne, which further strengthened her popularity among audiences.
In 1959, Nutan married Rajnish Bahl, an officer in the Indian Navy. Despite marriage, she successfully continued her acting career. Her performances in Milan (1967) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki earned her additional Filmfare Best Actress Awards. In total, she won the prestigious award five times, a remarkable achievement for that era.
After establishing herself as a leading actress, Nutan also made a strong impression in character roles. Her performances in Meri Jung and Karma were highly praised. Over a career spanning four decades, she appeared in more than 70 films.
In recognition of her immense contribution to Indian cinema, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri in 1974.
Nutan passed away on February 21, 1991, but her cinematic legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and film lovers. Her son, Mohnish Bahl, went on to establish a successful acting career, while her sister Tanuja and niece Kajol carried forward the family’s rich tradition in Indian cinema.
