Washington/Tehran: In a major development that could significantly reduce tensions in the Middle East, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of planned military strikes against Iran that were scheduled for a third consecutive day. During a White House briefing, Trump claimed that a historic agreement with Tehran is now in its final stages, with all parties reportedly reaching a consensus. He added that the time and venue for the signing of the agreement would be announced soon.
Just hours before making this announcement, Trump had warned Iran of “very serious consequences” and threatened that the U.S. military could seize Iran’s strategically important Kharg Island and other key oil infrastructure if tensions continued to escalate.
Did Trump’s ‘Escalate to De-escalate’ Strategy Work?
According to international security expert Richard Weitz of the NATO Defense College, President Trump appears to have employed an “escalate to de-escalate” strategy against Iran.
Under this approach, the threat of a larger and potentially devastating military response is used to push an adversary toward negotiations and ultimately reduce tensions. Analysts believe Trump’s recent threats targeting Iranian islands and oil facilities were part of this strategy, which now appears to have brought Tehran closer to a diplomatic settlement.
However, significant uncertainty remains regarding the exact terms of the agreement and how they will be implemented in practice.
Iran’s Key Priorities: Sanctions Relief and Security Guarantees
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has yet to officially confirm that a final agreement has been reached. Security analysts suggest that Tehran’s primary demands in the negotiations include:
Security Guarantees: Iran is reportedly seeking written assurances from the United States that it will not face future military attacks. While Washington may be able to provide its own commitments, it cannot guarantee the actions of Israel. As a result, whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will support the agreement remains a crucial question.
Sanctions Relief: Years of conflict and U.S.-led economic restrictions have severely affected Iran’s economy. Tehran is expected to seek the restoration of frozen assets and immediate relief from international sanctions as part of any final settlement.
Other Key Developments on the Conflict Front
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz: Despite reports of progress in peace negotiations, tensions remain high on the ground. On Thursday night, Iran allegedly attempted to target commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz with suicide drones, which were reportedly intercepted by U.S. forces. Iran has also declared restrictions on maritime movement through the strategic waterway.
International Peace Fund for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Amid continuing tensions between Israel and Palestine, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom have jointly launched a $4 million Peace Fund. The initiative aims to support grassroots organizations, particularly youth and women-led groups, that promote the two-state solution and long-term peace efforts.
Tehran Residents Hope for Peace
Reports from Tehran indicate that many ordinary citizens have welcomed the possibility of a peace agreement. The prolonged conflict has placed immense pressure on the economy and affected the lives of countless families. At the same time, Iranian leaders are emphasizing that the sacrifices made during the crisis will not be in vain and that any agreement should strengthen Iran’s sovereignty and international standing.
While optimism is growing, observers caution that questions surrounding Israel’s position, security guarantees, sanctions relief, and the final terms of the agreement must still be resolved before lasting peace can be achieved.
