Larin’s Goal Earns Canada First Point in FIFA World Cup, 1-1 Draw Against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Toronto

Co-hosts Canada began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday night, thanks to a late equaliser from substitute striker Cyle Larin.

Played at the Toronto Stadium, the match saw Canada secure their first-ever World Cup point in history after coming from behind in an intense contest.

Bosnia and Herzegovina started the game on the front foot, applying early pressure on Canada’s defence. Their breakthrough came in the first half from a corner kick, where Sead Kolašinac headed the ball across goal and Jovo Lukić finished with a powerful header to give Bosnia a 1-0 lead.

Trailing early, Canada responded with attacking intent. Star forward Jonathan David came close to equalising, but Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj produced a fine save to preserve the lead. Tani Oluwaseyi also missed a good opportunity when his shot went over the bar.

In the second half, Canada increased the tempo and created several chances. Oluwaseyi nearly scored with a header, but Nikola Katić cleared it off the line. Richie Laryea also had a goal-bound effort blocked by Kolašinac, who made a crucial clearance to keep Bosnia ahead.

At the other end, Bosnia continued to threaten, with goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau making an important save to deny Ermedin Demirović.

Just when it looked like Bosnia would hold on for victory, Canada coach Jesse Marsch made a decisive substitution. Cyle Larin, introduced in the 76th minute, made an immediate impact by scoring just two minutes later. Receiving a precise pass from Promise David, Larin controlled the ball inside the box and calmly finished to level the score at 1-1.

In stoppage time, Larin nearly completed a dramatic comeback win, but his effort was blocked by Tarik Muharemović.

After the match, Larin said he was happy to help his team earn a valuable point at home. “Whenever Canada needs me, I try to score. We must continue to work hard and play with confidence,” he said.

With this result, Canada earned a crucial point in their opening World Cup match and gained early momentum in Group B.
