From Grief to Grit : Indian Cricketers Who Played On Despite Personal Tragedy

New Delhi

Losing a parent is one of life’s most devastating experiences, and coping with such grief often takes months or even years. Yet, Indian cricket has witnessed remarkable instances where players, despite personal loss, returned to the field within hours or days, showcasing extraordinary courage and commitment to the game.

Sachin Tendulkar: Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was part of the 1999 World Cup when his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, passed away on May 19. Tendulkar returned to India for the अंतिम संस्कार but soon flew back to England. On May 23, he played against Kenya and scored a brilliant 140 off 101 balls, dedicating the innings to his father.

Virat Kohli: In 2006, Virat Kohli lost his father to a heart attack during a Ranji Trophy match while representing Delhi against Karnataka. At just 18, Kohli chose to bat the next day and delivered a courageous knock of 90 runs, reflecting immense mental strength.

Mohammed Siraj: Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj faced a heartbreaking situation during India’s 2020 tour of Australia when his father passed away. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and bio-bubble protocols, he could not return home. Siraj went on to make his Test debut in the series and played a key role in India’s historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph, picking up 13 wickets in three matches.

Rishabh Pant: Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant lost his father just two days before the start of IPL 2017. After performing the अंतिम संस्कार, he rejoined his team Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) and scored a quickfire 57 off 36 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Mukesh Choudhary: In a recent example, Mukesh Choudhary, playing for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026, returned to the field just two days after losing his mother on April 21. On April 23, he featured against Mumbai Indians and made an impact by dismissing Quinton de Kock, conceding 31 runs in his four-over spell.

These instances highlight not only the emotional resilience of these players but also their unwavering dedication to the sport, even in the face of profound personal loss.
