India Defeats England by 7 Runs to Reach T20 World Cup 2026 Final; Faces New Zealand Next

India secured a thrilling 7-run victory over England in the second semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, earning a place in the final. The high-scoring encounter at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, showcased aggressive batting and crucial bowling spells, with India successfully defending a massive target of 254 runs.

The final match will be played on March 8, 2026, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India will face New Zealand for the championship.

India Posts Record Knockout Total

Batting first after losing the toss, India delivered an explosive batting performance, scoring 253 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs, one of the highest totals in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

Sanju Samson led the batting charge with a brilliant 89 runs off 42 balls, striking 8 fours and 7 sixes. His aggressive approach set the tone for India’s innings and earned him the Player of the Match award.

He received strong support from Ishan Kishan, who scored 39 runs, and Shivam Dube, who added a quick 43 runs from 25 balls. The partnership between Samson and Kishan proved crucial as they added 97 runs for the second wicket, stabilizing the innings after an early wicket.

In the final overs, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya accelerated the scoring. Varma smashed 21 runs from just 7 balls, while Pandya contributed 27 runs off 12 deliveries, helping India cross the 250-run mark.

England’s bowling struggled against the aggressive Indian batting lineup. Will Jacks and Adil Rashid took two wickets each, while Jofra Archer proved expensive, conceding over 60 runs in four overs.

England’s Chase Falls Short Despite Bethell’s Century

Chasing a daunting target of 254 runs, England had a difficult start. Phil Salt was dismissed early for 5 runs by Hardik Pandya, while captain Harry Brook managed only 7 runs before being caught off Jasprit Bumrah.

Jos Buttler looked promising but was bowled by Varun Chakravarthy after scoring 25 runs, leaving England under pressure during the powerplay.

Despite the early setbacks, Jacob Bethell produced a remarkable counterattack. He scored a spectacular 105 runs from 48 balls, hitting 8 fours and 7 sixes, keeping England in the contest until the final over.

Bethell also built key partnerships with Will Jacks (35 runs) and Sam Curran (18 runs), which briefly revived England’s hopes.

However, India’s disciplined bowling in the death overs turned the match in their favor. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a tight spell, conceding 33 runs in four overs, while Hardik Pandya took two crucial wickets for 38 runs.

England needed 30 runs in the final over, but Bethell was run out on the first ball, effectively ending England’s chances. The team finished at 246 for 7, falling short by seven runs.

India Advances to Fourth T20 World Cup Final

With this victory, India has reached the T20 World Cup final for the fourth time. The team previously won the tournament in 2007 and 2024, while finishing as runner-up in 2014.

The upcoming final against New Zealand is expected to be a highly competitive clash, as both teams aim to secure the 2026 T20 World Cup title.
