Bihar: Purnea MP Pappu Yadav Arrested at Midnight in 31-Year-Old Case

Patna.

Independent Member of Parliament from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, was arrested late Friday night by the police from his residence in Mandiri, Patna. Pappu Yadav had arrived in Patna on Friday evening.

According to the police, the arrest was made in connection with a case dating back to 1995. The case is related to the Gardanibagh police station and was originally registered under the old Indian Penal Code. It is now being pursued under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The MP faces charges under Sections 419, 420, 468, 448, 506, and 120B, which include allegations of cheating, forgery, criminal intimidation, trespass, and criminal conspiracy.

Sources said that court proceedings in the matter were ongoing, but the MP had been repeatedly absent, prompting the arrest. Patna City SP Bhanu Pratap Singh stated, “The MP has been taken to a hospital for a medical examination, after which he will be brought to the police station.”

Reacting to his arrest, MP Pappu Yadav termed the action politically motivated. He claimed it was a result of his fight for justice in the case of a NEET aspirant’s death. In a post on social media platform X, he wrote, “Excellent Bihar Police. We fought for justice for the NEET student, and the Bihar Police got upset. They reached my Patna residence to arrest me. But Pappu Yadav will neither bow nor remain silent. We will expose the misdeeds of the dishonest. Send me to jail or hang me, Pappu will not stop.”

After completion of medical formalities, he is expected to be produced before a court on Saturday. The arrest has intensified political tensions in Bihar, with his supporters alleging that the action was taken under political pressure.

It may be noted that Pappu Yadav had been continuously questioning the police administration and the state government over the death of a female student in a Patna hostel. He had also staged protests outside Parliament. His supporters argue that since he was openly engaging with the administration, the midnight arrest raises serious questions.
