Neem Flowers Offer Natural Relief from Heatwave, Digestive Issues and Skin Problems

New Delhi

With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, staying healthy during extreme heat has become increasingly challenging. According to traditional Ayurvedic practices, the consumption of Neem flowers can help the body cope with seasonal health problems such as heat stress, digestive disorders and skin issues.

Small yet fragrant, neem flowers are known for their cooling properties and medicinal benefits. Ayurveda recommends their consumption during summer as they help cool the body, purify the blood, improve digestion and promote healthy skin. These flowers also help relieve common stomach problems such as indigestion and constipation.

Although neem leaves are widely recognized for their bitter taste and medicinal value, the tiny flowers of the neem tree are equally beneficial. In many households, especially in earlier times, elders often prepared beverages or light snacks using neem flowers during the summer season. Apart from their mild fragrance and delicate appearance, neem flowers contain several therapeutic properties that help protect the body from heat-related problems.

A study published in the Taylor & Francis journal examined the phytochemicals present in neem flowers. The research analyzed extracts obtained using solvents such as chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol. The findings suggested that the ethanolic extract of neem flowers showed the most promising activity against conditions like Diabetes and certain cancer cells, while being less harmful and more beneficial compared to extracts from other parts of the plant.

In Ayurveda, neem flowers are valued for their antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Regular consumption during the summer season can help cleanse the blood, improve skin glow and reduce acne, blemishes and infections. They are also known to strengthen the immune system and stimulate appetite.

Neem flowers are particularly useful for digestive health. They help relieve indigestion, constipation, gas and intestinal worms while strengthening the digestive system and keeping the stomach clean. In northern India, neem flowers are often prepared as a light stir-fry with mustard oil and cumin seeds, while in southern India they are used in a variety of traditional dishes.

Drinking a sherbet made from neem flowers during hot weather helps cool the stomach, improves digestion and may also assist in regulating blood sugar levels. As heatwaves and rising temperatures continue to pose health risks during summer, neem flowers are considered a valuable natural remedy that helps balance the body and improve overall health.
