Hindi cinema has produced several stars whose identities were shaped not just by their films, but also by their distinctive personalities and styles. Dev Anand was one such legendary actor. His walk, manner of speaking, fashion sense and characteristic smile remained a topic of discussion among audiences for decades. He worked in films for nearly six decades and made his mark not only as an actor but also as a producer, director and writer.

Even as he grew older, the love of his fans never diminished. On his 88th birthday in 2011, he had revealed that fans had gathered outside his office to wish him.

Dev Anand was born on September 26, 1923. His original name was Dharam Dev Pishorimal Anand. He studied English Literature in Lahore and moved to Mumbai in 1943 after completing his education. He did not have much money, nor did he have any major connection in the film industry to support him. In an interview, he recalled that he struggled for nearly two years after arriving in Mumbai. He initially took up a job, but his dream was always to work in films.

Dev Anand got his first opportunity to act in the 1946 film Hum Ek Hain. He gained recognition with the 1948 film Ziddi and gradually emerged as one of the leading stars of Hindi cinema.

He went on to establish Navketan Films with his brother Chetan Anand. Under the banner, he produced several memorable films and also provided opportunities to new talent.

A Golden Era in the 1950s and 1960s

The 1950s and 1960s marked a particularly significant phase in Dev Anand’s career. During this period, films such as Baazi, Jaal, Taxi Driver, Kala Pani, Kala Bazaar, Guide and Jewel Thief were released.

His collaboration with his brother Vijay Anand produced films such as Guide, Jewel Thief, Kala Bazaar and Johny Mera Naam. Among the most important films of Dev Anand’s career, Guide remains particularly significant.

Dev Anand was not limited to acting. He also ventured into direction and production. Through films such as Prem Pujari, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and several others, he explored new subjects and provided opportunities to new actors and filmmakers.

He remained active in cinema until the final years of his life. His last film was Chargesheet, released in 2011. Even on his 88th birthday, he had said that he would continue making films as long as his body and mind supported him.

Awards and Honours

Dev Anand received several major honours during his illustrious career. He won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Kala Pani and Guide. In 1991, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002.

Dev Anand passed away in London on December 3, 2011, at the age of 88.
