New Delhi
. Friday has always been significant for Hindi cinema, as new films traditionally release on this day. These releases not only shape the careers of actors and directors but also play an important role in the economy.
Every Friday, audiences get to see different stories in theatres—but what if, within the same month and just two weeks apart, audiences are presented with nearly the same story?
This unusual situation occurred in the 1990s, when two films with almost identical storylines but different characters were released in the same month. We are talking about Jurm and Haar Jeet. Despite having similar plots, both films performed well at the box office.
First, let’s talk about Jurm, which released on July 13. In this film, Vinod Khanna played Inspector Shekhar Verma, who deeply loves his wife, portrayed by Meenakshi Seshadri. However, while helping a witness in a case, played by Sangeeta Bijlani, he falls in love with her. The film portrays extramarital relationships as a mistake, and after emotional conflict, his character eventually wins back his wife’s love. The film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and became one of the hits of the year.
Just two weeks later, on July 27, Haar Jeet hit theatres. While the title and characters were different, the storyline was almost identical. The film starred Kabir Bedi, Madhavi, and Farah Naaz in a similar love triangle. Like Jurm, it depicted a married man getting involved in an extramarital relationship and the emotional conflict between two relationships.
Interestingly, both films were inspired by the Hollywood movie Someone to Watch Over Me. Despite having similar stories, both films received appreciation from audiences.
