Curaçao head coach Dick Advocaat has urged his players to remain positive following their 7-1 defeat to Germany national football team in their opening Group E match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The veteran coach emphasized that simply qualifying for the tournament was a remarkable achievement for the Caribbean nation.
Curaçao briefly stunned Germany after leveling the score at 1-1 through a goal from Livano Comenencia. However, Germany’s superior quality, experience, and attacking strength eventually proved too much as they cruised to a commanding victory.
Speaking after the match, the 78-year-old coach acknowledged the gap in class between the two sides but insisted that the result should not overshadow his team’s accomplishment of reaching football’s biggest stage.
“Germany is one of the strongest teams in this competition, and we knew it would be a difficult challenge,” Advocaat said. “Of course, the scoreline is disappointing, but I don’t think there is any shame in losing to a team of that level.”
The Dutch tactician admitted that Curaçao had hoped to make life difficult for Germany but paid the price for defensive mistakes. He noted that Germany’s attacking firepower, particularly in the second half, was extremely difficult to contain.
Advocaat stressed that his immediate focus is on rebuilding the players’ confidence ahead of their next Group E fixture against Ecuador.
“We have to maintain our self-belief and keep trusting ourselves,” he said. “This is our first World Cup, and there is still a lot to play for in the remaining matches.”
The coach also praised Curaçao’s supporters, who traveled to Houston and created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the match. According to Advocaat, the passionate backing from the fans reflects the significance of the team’s historic World Cup campaign.
He expressed hope that his players would continue to enjoy the experience of competing on the world’s biggest football stage despite the setback.
Curaçao will next face Ecuador national football team, while Germany are set to take on Ivory Coast national football team in their next Group E encounter.
