“I Was Just Playing According to the Situation and the Ball”: Urvil Patel

Chennai

In the 53rd match of Indian Premier League 2026, Urvil Patel of Chennai Super Kings smashed the joint-fastest half-century in IPL history against Lucknow Super Giants. Speaking after the match, Urvil said that he was simply batting according to the match situation and reacting to the ball.

The young batter played a breathtaking knock and completed his fifty in just 13 balls, equaling the record held by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had achieved the feat against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023.

Urvil Patel scored a blistering 65 runs off just 23 deliveries, smashing eight sixes and two boundaries during his explosive innings. Riding on his remarkable knock, Chennai Super Kings successfully chased down the target of 204 runs with four balls remaining. It was also the first time since 2019 that CSK successfully chased a target of more than 180 runs.

After the match, Urvil said, “There was nothing specific in my mind. I just wanted to bat according to the situation and the ball. The coach only asked me to maintain a stable base and then go for my shots, and that’s exactly what I did. Ruturaj Gaikwad told me that the wicket was a bit low, so I had to be prepared for that. Apart from that, he didn’t say much and allowed me to play my natural game.”

Player of the Match Jamie Overton also expressed happiness over his performance. He said, “It feels great to contribute with a strong performance. Crossing the line and securing two more points is always satisfying. I think it was simply the result of doing what I do best. I just tried to hit the stumps consistently, and it worked in my favor.”

Jamie Overton picked up three crucial wickets while conceding 36 runs in his four-over spell.

This was Chennai Super Kings’ sixth win of the season, and the team has now climbed to the fifth position in the points table.
