Islamabad: Panic gripped Pakistan’s capital Islamabad after a powerful bomb blast ripped through a mosque during Friday prayers, leaving more than 50 people feared dead and over 70 injured, according to local media reports. However, the Pakistan government has so far officially confirmed the deaths of 12 people.
The injured were rushed to multiple hospitals across the city, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and CDA Hospital, where several are reported to be in critical condition. Visuals circulating on social media show scenes of chaos, destruction, and panic at the blast site.
According to initial reports, the explosion occurred at the Qasr-e-Khadijat-ul-Kubra Mosque, considered one of the prominent mosques in Islamabad. Preliminary investigations suggest the blast was the result of a suicide attack. Police and army units quickly reached the spot, cordoned off the area, and tightened security across the capital.
Sources said worshippers had started gathering at the mosque around 1 pm for Friday prayers when a suspicious individual attempted to enter the premises. Security personnel stopped him at the gate for checking, following which he allegedly detonated the explosives strapped to his body.
Islamabad Police have claimed that the suicide bomber had links to Afghanistan and have expressed suspicion over the possible involvement of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). However, no organization has officially claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The mosque targeted in the attack is considered a major place of worship for the Shia community. Pakistan’s Shia population is estimated at around 20 million, accounting for nearly 10 to 12 percent of the country’s total population.
Notably, this is the second major terrorist attack in Islamabad since November 2025. Earlier, a blast outside the Islamabad court in November 2025 had killed 12 people and injured 36 others, an attack later claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
