Deepak Punia: From Akhada Roots to Global Recognition, A Story of Grit and Determination

New Delhi |

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia has carved a name for himself on the global stage through sheer dedication and hard work, emerging as one of the country’s most inspiring sporting figures. Having represented India at the Commonwealth Games, his journey reflects perseverance and discipline.

Born on May 19, 1999, in Chhara town of Jhajjar district in Haryana, Deepak grew up in a wrestling environment. His father, Subhash Punia, a former wrestler himself, became his first coach and mentor, inspiring him to take up the sport at a very young age.

Deepak entered the akhada at the age of just five. Known for his strength and love for milk, he quickly began impressing everyone around him, winning several local bouts and earning cash prizes in traditional wrestling competitions.

His talent was soon recognized during a school-level meet by a coach from Chhatrasal Stadium. Transitioning from traditional मिट्टी wrestling to synthetic mats posed a challenge, but Deepak adapted quickly and turned it into a strength.

His rise in international wrestling began in 2016 when he won gold at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championship, followed by another gold at the World Cadet Championship. He continued his शानदार run with a gold medal at the Asian Junior Championship 2018 and a silver at the World Junior Championship the same year.

In 2019, Deepak achieved a major milestone by winning the Junior World Championship, becoming the first Indian since 2001 to secure the title.

At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Deepak reached the bronze medal bout in the men’s 86 kg category but narrowly missed out on a podium finish after losing to San Marino’s Myles Amine.

In April 2024, Deepak faced a setback when he was disqualified from the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, due to missing the weigh-in following a flight delay caused by heavy rains in Dubai. He later attempted to qualify through the World Qualifying Tournament in May 2024 but was unsuccessful.

Despite setbacks, Deepak has consistently delivered strong performances. He secured silver medals at the Asian Championships in 2021 and 2022 and won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Overall, he has claimed three silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Championships.

Coming from a humble background, Deepak Punia’s journey—from local akhadas to international arenas—serves as a powerful inspiration for young athletes across India. His achievements underline that with determination, discipline, and self-belief, even the biggest dreams can be realized.
