Are you struggling with weak core muscles, poor digestion, or frequent constipation? If yes, Shalabhasana could be highly beneficial for you. With the International Day of Yoga approaching, the Ministry of AYUSH is sharing daily insights on yoga postures and their health benefits. In this series, the focus today is on Shalabhasana.
According to the Ministry, the human body often gives subtle warning signs before major health issues arise. Weak core muscles, digestive problems, and recurring constipation can significantly impact daily life. Shalabhasana is considered highly effective in addressing these concerns.
Also known as the Locust Pose, Shalabhasana involves lying on the stomach and lifting both legs upward, giving the body a shape similar to an arrow. This posture strengthens the lower abdominal muscles, improves back muscle strength, and enhances overall core stability.
Regular practice of Shalabhasana offers multiple benefits. It strengthens core muscles, improves digestion, and provides relief from constipation. Additionally, it helps reduce back and lower back pain, boosts overall strength and endurance, alleviates fatigue, and enhances energy levels.
Experts recommend starting the practice by lying flat on the stomach on a mat, keeping the chin on the ground. Place both hands alongside the body with palms facing downward. While inhaling, slowly raise both legs as high as possible and hold the position for a few seconds. Then, while exhaling, gently lower the legs back down. Beginners should start with 3–4 repetitions and gradually increase over time.
The Ministry notes that regular practice strengthens abdominal muscles, leading to improved digestion and relief from common issues like constipation. This yoga pose is particularly beneficial for individuals who sit for long hours.
However, certain precautions are advised. Pregnant women, individuals with hernia, severe back issues, or those who have recently undergone surgery should consult a yoga expert before practicing.
