New Delhi,
The intensity of heat is rising rapidly across the country. By the last week of April, temperatures in many states have already gone significantly above normal. According to the Meteorological Department, even more severe heat is expected in the coming days. This extreme heat can have serious effects on people’s health, making it essential to take timely precautions.
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, has urged the public to adopt necessary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses. According to the ministry, such illnesses can be prevented if the right steps are taken at the right time.
First and foremost, people should not be careless about their health during extreme heat and rising temperatures. If someone feels unwell, they should immediately move to a cool place, drink sufficient water to stay well-hydrated, monitor their body temperature, and consult a doctor without delay if needed.
The most common problems during extreme heat are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If a person suddenly feels unwell, experiences dizziness, muscle cramps, excessive sweating, or stops sweating altogether, these should be considered serious symptoms. In such cases, health experts recommend immediate action.
The person should be moved to a cool and ventilated place, and their body temperature should be monitored regularly. They should consume electrolyte-rich fluids such as lemon water, salt-sugar solution, buttermilk, or Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS). Along with plain water, maintaining electrolyte balance is essential. If symptoms become severe, immediate medical assistance should be sought.
The AYUSH Ministry also advises wearing light-colored, loose clothing during the summer, avoiding going out in the sun between 12 PM and 4 PM, and ensuring proper ventilation indoors. Health experts note that children, the elderly, and those with existing illnesses are at the highest risk during extreme heat, and therefore require special care.
