Jaipur. In a major anti-corruption operation, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jaipur, has arrested Dr. Manish Agarwal, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Additional Principal of SMS Medical College, for allegedly accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe. The trap was executed by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) under the directions of the ACB Headquarters.
The Complaint and Verification
According to Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Smita Srivastava, the ACB received a complaint stating that the accused had demanded a bribe from a supplier of brain coils used in neurosurgery.
The complainant alleged that Dr. Agarwal was harassing him for money in exchange for counter-signing bills related to the supplied medical equipment.
Following this, a preliminary verification was conducted under the supervision of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Anil Kayal of the Jaipur Range. Once the complaint was found genuine, the ACB team planned and executed a trap operation.
Caught in the Act
During the operation carried out on Thursday, the ACB team caught Dr. Manish Agarwal red-handed while accepting ₹1 lakh from the complainant.
Officials confirmed that the money was related to the approval of bills for medical supplies.
Investigation Underway
The ACB has taken Dr. Agarwal into custody and is currently interrogating him to determine whether this was an isolated act of corruption or part of a larger organized network within the medical supply system.
A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is in progress.
Wider Implications for the Medical Community
SMS Medical College is one of Rajasthan’s premier medical institutions. The arrest of such a senior academic and administrative figure has sent shockwaves through the medical fraternity.
The incident raises serious concerns about integrity and transparency in government medical institutions.
Official Statement by ACB
ADG Smita Srivastava stated — “No matter how senior an officer may be, anyone involved in corruption will face strict legal action. The ACB remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability across all government departments.”
She added that the ACB is also conducting forensic and digital verification of evidence and that searches at the doctor’s office and residence are being considered.
Tension Within the College Administration
News of Dr. Agarwal’s arrest caused a stir within SMS Medical College.
Several staff members and faculty have been called in for initial questioning to ascertain whether bribery practices were systemic or individual in nature.
Sources indicate that the college administration is considering suspending Dr. Agarwal pending further inquiry.
Rising Anti-Corruption Operations in Rajasthan
The ACB has been increasingly active across Rajasthan in recent months, targeting senior government officials in various departments — from the education sector to municipal corporations, and now the medical education department.
These actions have strengthened the public perception that the state is tightening its grip on corruption.
As the ACB continues its investigation, officials are focusing on determining whether this bribery case is part of a larger nexus involving procurement and billing processes at SMS Medical College.
The case underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining ethical conduct and public trust in government-run medical institutions.
