New Delhi:
The number recorded in a hemoglobin (Hb) report may appear to be just another figure, but it can provide important information about your overall health. Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen to different parts of the body. When the hemoglobin level falls below the normal range, the condition is known as anemia.
Anemia can cause symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches and getting tired quickly while performing routine activities. Therefore, it is important to understand your Hb report and seek medical advice when necessary.
The National Health Mission, Uttar Pradesh, said in a post on social media platform X that the severity of anemia is not the same for every age group or category. The hemoglobin thresholds can differ for children, women, pregnant women and men.
For children aged 6 to 59 months, an Hb level of 10 to 10.9 grams per decilitre (g/dL) is considered an indication of mild anemia, 7 to 9.9 g/dL indicates moderate anemia, while a level below 7 g/dL indicates severe anemia.
Among children aged 5 to 11 years, an Hb level of 11 to 11.4 g/dL indicates mild anemia, 8 to 10.9 g/dL moderate anemia and below 8 g/dL severe anemia.
Similarly, in children aged 12 to 14 years, an Hb level of 11 to 11.9 g/dL falls in the mild anemia category, 8 to 10.9 g/dL indicates moderate anemia, while below 8 g/dL indicates severe anemia.
For females aged 15 years and above, an Hb level of 11 to 11.9 g/dL is considered mild anemia, 8 to 10.9 g/dL moderate anemia and below 8 g/dL severe anemia.
The Hb thresholds are different for pregnant women. A level of 10 to 10.9 g/dL indicates mild anemia, 7 to 9.9 g/dL moderate anemia and below 7 g/dL severe anemia.
Among males aged 15 years and above, an Hb level of 11 to 12.9 g/dL may indicate mild anemia, 8 to 10.9 g/dL moderate anemia and below 8 g/dL severe anemia.
However, starting medication based solely on an Hb reading is not advisable. Anemia can result from iron deficiency, vitamin deficiencies, blood loss, infections or other underlying health conditions. Therefore, anyone whose Hb level is found to be low should consult a doctor.
A balanced diet may include green leafy vegetables, pulses, legumes and other iron-rich foods. Any required supplements should be taken only on medical advice.
