Restlessness, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat without stress may be linked to gut health

New Delhi.

If you suddenly experience restlessness, anxiety, and a rapid heartbeat without any apparent stress, it may not necessarily be due to stress but could be linked to digestive issues.

People often associate discomfort in the chest or heart with stress or heart diseases, but that is not always the case. Problems in digestion can also have a direct impact on heart function and overall mental state.

When digestion is poor, leading to gas formation and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach, it can directly affect the mind and heart rate. Therefore, recurring issues like anxiety, gas, indigestion, constipation, or bloating should not be ignored. In Ayurveda, the gut is closely connected to the mind—if the stomach is unhealthy, it can negatively affect mental well-being as well.

When gas forms due to digestive problems, it creates pressure in the abdomen, which may radiate upwards, sometimes causing chest discomfort or a burning sensation. This can often be mistaken for a heart attack, leading to panic, whereas it may actually be a sign of poor digestion. Such conditions can trigger both anxiety and restlessness.

Additionally, frequent gas, acid reflux (sour belching), or constipation are signs of toxin (Ama) buildup in the body. When toxin levels increase, digestive issues tend to occur more frequently, making detoxification important.

This problem is commonly seen in people who eat late at night, sit immediately after meals instead of walking, consume excessive fried or oily food, experience high stress, or have irregular bowel movements. All these factors weaken digestion.

To prevent this, it is important to eat meals on time and take a walk after eating. Avoid late-night meals. If you have constipation, consuming fennel seeds and rock sugar at night may help. Maintaining proper digestion can prevent toxin buildup in the body.
