Legendary singer Asha Bhosle may no longer be among us, but her melodious voice and extraordinary achievements will continue to resonate for generations. Starting her singing career at the young age of nine, she went on to record thousands of songs over a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades, leaving an indelible mark across diverse musical genres.

Initially known for cabaret and dance numbers, Asha Bhosle later showcased her versatility by rendering soulful ghazals in films like Umrao Jaan, proving her wide-ranging musical prowess. Over the years, she received some of the most prestigious honours in Indian cinema and music, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, along with multiple Filmfare and National Awards. Her accolades stand as a testament to her immense talent, dedication, and hard work.

Beyond Bollywood, Asha Bhosle also excelled in jazz and classical music, earning recognition as one of the most iconic voices in Hindi film music after Lata Mangeshkar. Her voice captivated audiences across generations.

Asha Bhosle won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer seven times for the following songs:

  • 1968: “Garibon Ki Suno” (Das Lakh)
  • 1969: “Parde Mein Rehne Do” (Shikar)
  • 1972: “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (Caravan)
  • 1973: “Dum Maro Dum” (Hare Rama Hare Krishna)
  • 1974: “Hone Lagi Hai Raat” (Naina)
  • 1975: “Chain Se Humko Kabhi” (Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye)
  • 1979: “Yeh Mera Dil” (Don)

In addition, she received the Filmfare Special Award in 1996 for Rangeela and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. She also won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer twice—first in 1981 for “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and again in 1986 for “Mera Kuch Samaan” from Ijaazat.

Among her other major honours, Asha Bhosle was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 for her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, India’s second-highest civilian award. She was also honoured with the Nightingale of Asia Award in 1987 and the Singer of the Millennium Award in 2000. In 2002, she received the IIFA Award for the song “Radha Kaise Na Jale” from the film Lagaan.
