Actress Helly Shah, who is receiving praise for her performance in the fifth season of the popular OTT series Gullak, has emphasized the importance of financial planning and savings in the face of ongoing global tensions and economic uncertainty.
Speaking to IANS, Helly highlighted the need for people to manage their finances wisely and make informed investment decisions. Referring to the traditional concept of a “gullak” (piggy bank), she said it holds a strong emotional connection for many Indians and symbolizes the value of saving money from an early age.
“A gullak is something we all relate to from childhood. Saving money is extremely important, but having the right financial knowledge is equally essential. People should invest in the right places, such as mutual funds, and avoid investing in gold. My father taught me the importance of saving money,” she said.
The actress explained that she learned financial discipline not through formal lessons but by observing her father’s habits and approach to money management.
“My father never sat me down and gave me financial lessons. I learned by watching him. Understanding how much money should go into fixed deposits and how much into mutual funds is something I developed over time. It is important to manage expenses wisely and make smart decisions about saving because financial security matters,” she added.
During the conversation, Helly also spoke about her transition from television to OTT platforms and the challenges that come with changing mediums.
According to her, one of the biggest hurdles for actors moving from television to digital platforms is breaking free from preconceived industry perceptions.
“My first challenge was stepping out of that category and entering a space that was unfamiliar and outside my comfort zone. OTT became that new space for me,” she said.
Having built a strong fan base through television, Helly acknowledged that many performers continue to be labeled as “TV actors” even after successfully working in other formats. However, she believes consistent performances and the right opportunities can gradually change public perception.
The actress continues to expand her presence in the digital entertainment space while earning appreciation for her work in Gullak Season 5.
