As Lagaan completed 25 years since its release, British actress Rachel Shelley looked back on her experience with the iconic film, describing it as a journey filled with gratitude, cherished memories, and lasting impact.
Rachel, who played the beloved character Elizabeth Russell in the Oscar-nominated period drama, shared a heartfelt video on Instagram to mark the film’s silver jubilee. Reflecting on her association with the classic, she said the memories remain as vivid today as they were decades ago.
“Sometimes I feel like it was just yesterday, and other times it feels like another lifetime ago,” Shelley said in the video.
The actress expressed gratitude to audiences worldwide for keeping the film alive through generations. She emphasized that while filmmakers create a movie, it is the audience that ultimately gives it meaning and longevity.
“I have to say that I feel as the cast and crew, we make the film. But the audience, by watching it, by giving it so much love and support over the years, you’re the ones who complete the film,” she said.
Shelley added that the experience of working on Lagaan continues to influence her professional life.
“It’s with me every day. It’s informed every piece of work I have ever done since,” she noted.
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, Lagaan was released in 2001 and became one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. Set in 1893 during the British Raj, the story follows villagers from a drought-stricken region who challenge British rulers to a game of cricket to escape oppressive taxes.
Aamir Khan portrayed Bhuvan, while Rachel Shelley played Elizabeth Russell, the compassionate sister of British officer Captain Andrew Russell, portrayed by Paul Blackthorne. One of the film’s most memorable storylines featured Elizabeth secretly teaching cricket to the villagers, helping them prepare for the decisive match.
The film earned widespread critical acclaim both in India and internationally. It received a nomination at the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category and won several prestigious honors, including National Film Awards.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Lagaan returned to theatres for a special three-day re-release from June 12 to June 14. The milestone was also marked by a reunion hosted by Aamir Khan, bringing together several members of the original cast and crew, including Paul Blackthorne, Rajendra Nath Zutshi, Aditya Lakhia, and Yashpal Sharma.
